For my birthday my husband and I returned to the Kent coast and to Whitstable. We had been here for the first time in the summer of 2016 and had one of our best holidays ever. We stumbled across the Forge on a walk along the sea-front and I was immediately drawn to the sign promoting the ‘best doughnuts on the Kent coast’. Last year I tried their classic doughnuts which were light, hot and sprinkled with just the right amount of sugar. This year I went for their ‘donut soufflè’, a wonderful creation of two doughnuts with honeycomb ice cream (other flavours were available) and a flake. As last year, the dough was light and airy, with a crispy outside, and they were sprinkled with sugar and chocolate powder. The honeycomb ripples of the ice cream were flavoursome, though the vanilla base wasn’t quite as creamy as I would have liked – but perhaps that helped to get the balance right for such a sweet dessert.
The queue was super-long, testament to how delicious the doughnuts were!
